Washburn American Legion
The Washburn American Legion (WAL) - Victor B. Wallin Post 12 - has been a part of Washburn and its surrounding communities for over 100 years. It is a veteran’s organization that serves local veterans and their families. WAL purchases a few uniforms, flags, and flag poles each year, but the rest of the money raised through charitable gaming goes back to the community and surrounding communities of Wilton, Underwood, and Mercer.
Here are just a few of the things WAL charitable gaming has been able to support and donate to:
- $65,000 towards the new Wilton splash pad
- $40,000 towards the Washburn swimming pool
- Over $20,000 to the Washburn & Wilton Senior Centers
- Donations to people in the community who’ve lost their homes, and to several community members that have battled cancer
- Yearly donations to the community fire departments and ambulances
- Youth sports, dance team, park board and community center donations
- Donations to community cemeteries
- Purchasing new sports boards for some of the high schools
- After prom parties for the communities
- Yearly scholarships for high school youth
- Summer open gym sponsorship
- Sponsorship for high school yearbooks
- Donations to local events such as the Festival of Lights, Lewis and Clark Riverboat Days and Wild in Wilton
These are only a few of the ways that Washburn American Legion has given back throughout the years, and as you can see, charitable gaming is good for North Dakota communities.
